The Coat of Arms of the Family Breznik.

There actually was, to my knowledge, no one going by the name of Breznik when the Coat of Arms was bestowed upon us. There were however many variations of the original name as you will notice above. The original name in Polish meant 'one whose dwelling was in or near the birch Trees'.

You will also note that the name on the Coat of Arms is NOWINA. One of our ancestors, Stanislaw Brzozowski, was ennobled in 1764 for his military services to the state. From my understanding, any new ennobled families would have to join an existing family or as they were called - Clan. We along with approximately 100 other Polish families joined the Nowina Clan.

The Coat of Arms of the Family Hewitt.

It is felt by Historians that the HEWITT (Huet) name was brought from France to England by the ancestors of the Hewitt Family when they migrated to the region after the Norman Conquest in 1066. The name spread to the Celtic countries of Ireland Scotland and Wales. It was a popular name partly due to the fame of St. Hugh (Hewitt) of Lincoln who was the first Prior of the Carthusian monastery in England. (The monastery was built by Henry II of England as part of his penance for the murder of Thomas Beckett.)

Family Crest:

Just as there are many variations in the spelling of the name HEWITT, so too are there many variations of the Family Crest. But the main parts of the crest are the same.

White denotes Peace and Sincerity. Red is ‘The Martyr’s colour’. It signifies Military Fortitude and Magnanimity. The Chevron denotes protection. It is often granted as a reward to one who has achieved some notable enterprise. The squiggly (engrailed) line on the Chervon signifies Earth or Land. The OWL signifies vigilance and acute wit.

The original name means ' a residence near a clearing'.
